10세기 무렵, 타이어를 사용하는 민족이 중국에서 이주해 옵니다.
1238년, 당시 이 지역을 지배하던 크메르 왕국에서 벗어나 타이인이 세운 최초의 왕국인 수코타이(Sukhothai)가 등장합니다. 수코타이는 한때 오늘날 태국 영토의 대부분을 지배하며 번영을 누립니다.
1296년경, 치앙마이 왕국이 세워지며 두 태국 민족 국가가 공존합니다.
14세기 중반, 수코타이 왕국을 무너뜨리고 시암 왕국의 첫 왕조인 아유타야(Ayutthaya) 왕조가 등장합니다.
15세기 초, 아유타야 왕조는 크메르 왕국을 멸망시킵니다. 이후 강력한 중앙집권제를 구축하고 활발한 무역을 통해 전성기를 맞습니다.
16세기 들어 미얀마 세력의 침략이 잦아집니다.
1767년, 미얀마가 수도 아유타야를 장악하며 야유타야 왕조가 몰락합니다. 미얀마에 대항해 저항 운동을 이끈 딱신(Taksin) 왕은 1768년 톤부리(Thonburi)로 수도를 옮기고 톤부리 왕조를 세웁니다.
1782년, 짜끄리(Chakri) 왕조가 새로이 들어서며 수도를 방콕으로 옮깁니다.
시암 왕국은 라오스, 캄보디아, 말레이 반도까지 영토를 확장합니다.
이후 시암 왕국은 서구 열강에 이권을 차츰 양도하며 동남아시아에서 유일하게 독립을 유지합니다.
1932년, 쿠데타로 절대군주제가 무너지고 입헌군주제 정부가 들어서며 군부 중심의 정치가 시작됩니다.
1939년, 국호를 시암에서 타이로 변경합니다.
10th – 13th Century
Around the 10th century, a Thai-speaking tribe migrates to the area from China.
In 1238, the Thai people broke away from the Khmer Empire, the power that ruled the region at the time, and created their own kingdom of Sukhothai for the first time. Sukhothai thrived as it grew to encompass most of the land of modern Thailand.
Around 1296, the kingdom of Chiang Mai was established, and both Thai national states lived harmoniously.
14th – 17th Century
In the mid-14th century, the Kingdom of Sukhothai fell to the Ayutthaya dynasty, the first dynasty of Siam.
The Khmer Empire fell to the Ayutthaya dynasty in the early 15th century. After this, Siam established a strong central government and prospered through trade.
Invasions from powers in Myanmar became more frequent in the 16th century.
18th – 19th Century
In 1767, Myanmar overtook the capital of Ayutthaya, causing the dynasty to fall. Taksin, who led the resistance against Myanmar, moved the capital to Thonburi in 1768 and began the Thonburi dynasty.
The Chakri dynasty began in 1782 and moved the capital to Bangkok.
Early 19th Century
Siam expanded its influence into Laos, Cambodia, and the Malay peninsula.
After that, while Siam gradually gave up some of its rights to the Western powers, it was the only country in southeast Asia to remain independent.
20th Century
The absolute monarchy fell in a coup d’etat in 1932, transitioning Siam into a constitutional monarchy centered around a military government.
In 1939, the name of the country was changed from Siam to Thailand.
