믈라카 해협(Strait of Melaka)을 중심으로 세워진 스리위자야(Srivijaya) 왕국이 해상 무역의 중심지로 발전합니다.
말레이 반도 남부로 영토를 확장하며 10세기경 전성기를 맞습니다.
스리위자야 왕국이 멸망한 후, 말레이 반도 일대는 자바 마자파힛 왕국(Kemaharajaan Majapahit)의 지배를 받습니다.
14세기경 이슬람교가 전파됩니다.
15세기 초, 옛 스리위자야 출신 세력이 믈라카에 말레이 반도 최초의 독립 국가인 믈라카 술탄국(Sultanate of Melaka)을 세웁니다.
1511년, 포르투갈이 믈라카를 침략하며 식민 지배를 시작합니다. 17세기 중반부터 네덜란드가 믈라카를 점령합니다.
18세기 후반, 영국령 동인도회사가 페낭(Penang)을 차지하며 영국의 식민 지배가 시작됩니다.
1867년, 영국이 페낭, 믈라카, 싱가포르를 포함하는 해협 식민지를 설립합니다.

History
2nd – 6th Century
Various Malay kingdoms begin appearing especially in the northern regions of Malaysia in roughly the 2nd century.
For the next 1,000 years, the culture developed into a mixture of Buddhism and Hinduism, due to influence from India.
7th – 13th Century
The Srivijaya Empire, the center of which was the Strait of Melaka, developed into a center for maritime trade.
The empire expanded into the southern part of the Malay peninsula in the 10th century, beginning an era of prosperity.
14th – 15th Century
After the fall of the Srivijaya Empire, the Malay peninsula came under the rule of Kemaharajaan Majapahit.
In roughly the 14th century, Islam began to spread.
In the early 15th century, a group from the Srivijaya Empire created the first independent country on the Malay peninsula, the Sultanate of Melaka.
16th – 19th Century
In 1511, the Sultanate of Melaka fell to Portugal, and colonial rule began. The Netherlands came and seized Melaka in the mid-17th century.
In the late 18th century, the British East India Company took over Penang and began its colonial rule.
In 1867, the United Kingdom established colonial rule in the strait with Penang, Melaka, and Singapore.
20th Century
After the end of World War II, the United Kingdom re-established its colonial power, and Malaysia began protesting for democracy.
In 1957, the 11 states of the Malay peninsula united into the Federation of Malaya, gaining independence from the United Kingdom.
Malaysia was born after Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak united with the Federation of Malaya in 1963.
