ASEAN-Korea Centre is an International Organization mandated to promote economic and socio-cultural cooperation between ASEAN Member States and Korea.

Marking its 9th Anniversary, ASEAN-Korea Centre to hold 10th Council Director Meeting

- The organization to leap forward with the appointment of new Secretary General and secondment of ASEAN officials -

Busan, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will hold its 10th Annual Council Meeting in Busan, Korea on 26-27 February 2018. The Council is the highest decision-making body of the ASEAN-Korea Centre and consists of high ranking officials including high-ranking officials or Ambassadors appointed by the 10 ASEAN Member States and Korea. The 1st Meeting of Council was held in March 2009, where the ASEAN-Korea Centre was officially inaugurated.

Amid the growing importance of ASEAN-Korea relations after the Korean government’s unveiling of the “New Southern Policy”, this year’s meeting is expected to pave the way for the ASEAN-Korea Centre to take another leap forward. Firstly, the organization’s work programs for FY2018 which will be carried out under the collective theme of “Connecting People, Sharing Prosperity” will be approved by the Council Directors. This year, four specific elements will be particularly emphasized: Prosperity and Industry 4.0; Sustainable Development; People-Centred Community-building; and People-to-People Exchange. Secondly, projects that were held in FY2017 will be reviewed. Marking the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN, ASEAN-ROK Cultural Exchange Year, and Visit ASEAN@50 Campaign, the ASEAN-Korea Centre organized a variety of vibrant culture and tourism programs during the ASEAN Month to greatly raise the public awareness of ASEAN, while aligning its trade and investment programs with the trends of Industry 4.0 as well as strengthening the capacity-building element for mutual prosperity.

Thirdly, a total of four ASEAN officials will be seconded to four units each for a three-year term. They are expected to contribute to planning and implementing the organization’s needs-based and tailor-made work programs for ASEAN. Lastly, appointment of the new Secretary General, Lee Hyuk, will be confirmed by the Council Directors. He was a member of the Task Force team for establishing the ASEAN-Korea Centre, and previously served as Director General for Asia Pacific Affairs, Deputy Minister for Planning and Coordination, and Ambassador to the Philippines.

It is the first time to hold the meeting in Busan where the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit was held in 2014 as well as the ASEAN Culture House was officially open in 2017. Dinner reception on 26 February is expected to be attended by Honorary Councils and influential figures from the international organizations, media, academia, business community, and cultural institutions in this area.
