Korea to join hands with Cambodia for win-win partnership in agricultural and food industries

- The ASEAN-Korea Centre and the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia to co-organize the Trade Facilitation Workshop for Cambodian MSMEs (23-25 May, Phnom Penh) -

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk) and the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia will jointly hold the ‘Trade Facilitation Workshop for Cambodian MSMEs’ from 23 to 25 May 2018 in Phnom Penh and Kampong Speu, Cambodia’s major agricultural province located in the southeast. The Korean delegation, which is comprised of business leaders and experts from agricultural and food industries, will share knowledge and expertise with Cambodian MSMEs and explore business opportunities in Cambodia.

According to Lee Hyuk, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, “Cambodia has experienced rapid economic growth with an average annual GDP growth rate of 7% in recent years. To maintain sustainable economic growth and enhance global competitiveness, the Cambodian government mapped out the Cambodia Industrial Development Policy 2015-2025 with agriculture as one of the major industries. Agriculture is the country’s leading industry which contributes to about one-quarter of national GDP, but accounts for only 6% of total exports. Considering this, the government aims to increase the export of processed agricultural products to 12% of total exports by 2025. In order to strengthen the capacity of the Cambodian agricultural and food industries, the Workshop will establish a foundation to share experiences and good practices of Korean business leaders and experts on packaging and marketing of processed agricultural and food products. At the same time, it will contribute to increasing opportunities for Korean companies to seek new agricultural business opportunities with Cambodian businesspeople.”

The ‘Trade Facilitation Workshop for Cambodian MSMEs’ will take place on 24 May. The Korean delegation will give presentations to about 80 representatives from local MSMEs on the following topics: ‘Korea’s Agriculture Market Trend and Import Process’; ‘Regulations and Quarantine Procedures for Imported Food in Korea’; ‘Packaging Trend and Cases of Korea’; ‘Technology Trends and Regulations for Food Packaging’; as well as ‘Branding and Marketing Strategy for Cambodian Foods to Enter the Korean Market.’ The speakers will be from CJ Freshway, National Food Information Service, CJ Cheiljedang, Korea Conformity Lab, and Developus respectively. On 25 May, Korean and Cambodian participants will have one-on-one business consultations on their topics of interest to establish more substantial and trusted collaboration.

In addition, the Korean delegation will conduct industrial visits on 23 May to gain a better understanding of local industries and conduct market research. They will visit Confirel Co., Ltd. in Kampong Speu, a Cambodian company manufacturing healthy products using sugar palm trees, pepper, and other natural ingredients; Hyundai Arirang Farm, a modernized mango farm operated by a leading Korean trading company called Hyundai Agro; and the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to obtain information on methods to enter the industrial park and its benefits. Subsequently, the Korean delegation will attend a networking dinner with representatives from Korean companies in Cambodia and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) Phnom Penh Office for information sharing and networking.
