ASEAN Trade Fair to bolster trade between ASEAN and Korea in the seafood sector

- The ASEAN-Korea Centre to hold the ASEAN Trade Fair to showcase and promote the ASEAN seafood products to the Korean market (9-11 May, Seoul) -

Seoul,Korea – The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk) will organize the 'ASEAN Trade Fair' from 9 to 11 May 2018 at COEX and Trade Tower in Seoul. The Fair, which will be held in conjunction with one of the largest seafood exhibition in Korea called 'Seoul International Seafood Show 2018,' aims to introduce quality seafood products of 27 companies from five ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Fair is also expected to provide a venue for ASEAN exporters to understand the Korean market and explore business opportunities with Korean buyers.

Lee Hyuk, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, said, "Korea is the world's biggest seafood consumer per person and domestic seafood consumption is on the rise. To meet the growing market demand, import volumes are set to increase. Since Vietnam and Thailand already ranked 3rd and 6th among Korea's seafood importing countries respectively, other ASEAN countries are also expected to expand their shares in the Korean seafood market by importing more seafood products such as shrimp and webfoot octopus. I hope that the ASEAN Trade Fair will provide a platform for participating ASEAN seafood companies to successfully enter the Korean market by enhancing their understanding of the Korean market trend, becoming familiar with import procedures, and building business networks with Korean companies."

During the 'Seoul International Seafood Show 2018,' a total of 27 companies from five ASEAN countries will showcase diverse seafood products including shrimp, squid, and webfoot octopus in a variety of forms such as frozen food, processed food, canned food, sauce, and snacks. They will also hold 1:1 business meetings with Korean and international buyers during the 3-day exhibition. Furthermore, trade promotion agencies from five participating ASEAN companies are planned to set up the individual booths to promote their seafood products and provide consultations for Korean companies that are interested in doing business with or importing products from ASEAN countries.

Prior to the exhibition, the 'Trade Facilitation Workshop on Korean Seafood Market and Importation Policy' will take place on 8 May at Trade Tower to enhance the understanding of the Korean import clearance process and seafood market among the ASEAN government officials and businesspeople. The Workshop will contain three sessions, namely: 'Food Safety and Quality Assurance' by NSF Korea; 'Korea’s Seafood Market Trend' by CJ Freshway; and 'Customs Clearance, FTA Issues' by Neo Customs.

The ASEAN-Korea Centre has been hosting the ASEAN Trade Fair since 2009 with the aim of narrowing the trade imbalance between ASEAN and Korea and facilitating the entry of ASEAN products into the Korean market. This year, the ASEAN-Korea Centre plans to hold three exhibitions including the Seoul International Seafood Show (May), Korea International Furniture & Interior Fair (August-September), and Global Game Exhibition (November). The themes of the exhibitions were decided upon close consultations with ASEAN countries, reflecting the needs of ASEAN countries and interests of Korean companies.
