ASEAN-Korea Youth Forum to encourage entrepreneurship among the youth

- ‘Fostering Global Entrepreneurship, Empowering the ASEAN-Korean Youth’ (18 September, Seoul City Hall) -

Seoul, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will organize the 2017 ASEAN-Korea Youth Forum under the theme of “Fostering Global Entrepreneurship, Empowering the ASEAN-Korean Youth," on 18 September 2017 at the Multipurpose Hall (8F) of Seoul City Hall. With the aim to inspire the youth to navigate through the opportunities in the field of entrepreneurship, the Forum will gather around 200 ASEAN and Korean university students in Korea. Experience-sharing of successful young entrepreneurs as well as business plan presentations by selected participating students will be featured at the Forum. The event is held jointly with Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG), Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia (UNESCAP-ENEA), and supported by the ASEAN Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Hanwha Dreamplus.

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, noted that, “Youth entrepreneurship is a key concept for ASEAN as well, as it aims for a ‘socially responsible community’. By sharing success stories and exchanging insights directly with experts and accomplished startup founders, I hope this Forum will provide a meaningful opportunity to nurture entrepreneurship among the ASEAN and Korean youth.”

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, Kim Chang-beom, Ambassador for International Relations of SMG, and Song Jong-guk, President of STEPI, and Kilaparti Ramakrishna, Director of UNESCAP-ENEA, will deliver remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the Forum. Following the Ceremony, three insightful sessions on youth entrepreneurship will be conducted. In the first session, Penny Low, the President and Founder of Social Innovation Park Ltd. in Singapore, will give a keynote speech on youth entrepreneurship in ASEAN and Korea. In the second session entitled ‘Young Innovators Talk’, successful young entrepreneurs will share their experiences on establishing businesses under the topic of global partnership. The third session will feature a business plan competition among the youth. Teams of ASEAN and Korean students will present their business ideas, which will be judged by the speakers of the first two sessions. The winning team will be given the opportunity to utilize an office space in Dreamplus63 Hanwha life Fintech Center. The Forum will end with a networking reception at the ASEAN Hall of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, where participants will be able to discuss diverse issues and foster a long-lasting friendship.

Held in 2014 on the occasion of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit, the first ever ASEAN-Korea Youth Forum gathered ASEAN students residing in Korea to discuss the future of ASEAN-Korea partnership. According to the Ministry of Education of Korea, the number of ASEAN students in Korea reached 12,600 in 2016. As it is the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN and ASEAN-ROK Cultural Exchange Year this year, the Forum is anticipated to provide a meaningful opportunity to promote mutual understanding between ASEAN and Korea, as well as interaction among youth from the two regions.
