Workshop to enhance Cambodian tourism professional’s competitiveness to attract more Korean travelers

- ASEAN-Korea Centre to hold Tourism Capacity Building Workshop (12 Sep., Battambang, Cambodia) -


Battambang, Cambodia - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia will organize the ASEAN-Korea Tourism Capacity Building Workshop under the theme of “Shaping the Path Towards Cultural Heritage Tourism” on 12 September 2017 in Battambang, Cambodia. The Workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of local tourism professionals in promoting Battambang as a representative cultural heritage destination and developing tailor-made tourism products and services to Korean travelers. The Workshop also mirrors the Centre’s support for Cambodia’s commitment to conserve its cultural heritage and inscribe the three cities of Battambang, Kampot, and Kratie as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. *

 

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “With a wide range of tourism assets, Cambodia has attracted an increasing number of Korean tourists accounting for the 5th largest tourist arrival to the country in 2016. Well-known as ‘the rice bowl of Cambodia,’ Battambang has a huge potential to develop its heritage assets and sustainable tourism with ancient temples built in the Angkor era, colonial heritages, and natural wonders. I hope this Workshop will pave the way for Battambang as a cultural heritage destination for Koreans and serve as a great platform for exchange of experiences and know-how among tourism professionals between Cambodia and Korea.”

 

In the Opening Ceremony, Secretary General H.E. Kim Young-sun and H.E. Ok Darariddh, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia and H.E. Chan Sophal, Governor of Battambang Province are expected to deliver remarks. In the following session, representatives from Royal Embassy of Cambodia and the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia will give briefings on the overview of Cambodia-Korea relations in Tourism as well as tourism industries in Battambang. Also, Korean tourism experts will give lectures to about 100 local tourism professionals from both private and public sectors on the topics of ‘Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Battambang as a Cultural Heritage Destination’, ‘Branding Battambang as a Cultural Heritage Destination for Koreans’, and ‘Korean Culture: Insights on Korean Tourists.’ The lectures will enhance awareness among the participants the core values of cultural and urban heritages, and focus on the importance of preservation, sustainability, and social responsibility. Panel discussion, Q&A session, and networking reception will also take place, to deepen knowledge of the participants and facilitate the exchange of ideas. In addition, a roundtable discussion among Korean experts and policy makers from both public and private sectors in Battambang will be held on 11 September, to share experiences, strategies, and know-how in a sustainable tourism.

 

The ASEAN-Korea Centre has organized the ASEAN-Korea Tourism Capacity Building Workshop with an aim to strengthen competitiveness of the tourism industries of ASEAN with a view to better targeting and attracting the Korean tourists. The theme of the Workshop is chosen based on the needs and requests of the respective countries. In line with the Visit ASEASN@50: Golden Celebration Campaign as well as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the Workshop focusing on cultural heritage and sustainable tourism will be held back to back in Cambodia and Vietnam on 12 and 15 September 2017 respectively.

 

*The three cities have been under concerted effort and endeavor of a meticulous study for inscription conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts in close cooperation with the UNESCO Resident Representative in Cambodia.
