ASEAN-Korea Centre is an International Organization mandated to promote economic and socio-cultural cooperation between ASEAN Member States and Korea.

Workshop to enhance GMS countries’ E-commerce capacity and bridge digital gap in ASEAN

- ASEAN-Korea Centre to organize the Capacity Building Workshop for GMS Cross-border E-Commerce (22-24 Aug, Seoul) -

Seoul, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will organize the Capacity Building Workshop for Greater Mekong Subregional (GMS) Cross-border E-commerce on 22-24 August 2017 in Seoul, Korea. The Workshop will invite public and private stakeholders from the GMS Countries – Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam – to share Korea’s development experiences and expertise in the e-commerce industry. The Workshop is co-organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has played a leading role in the GMS development, and supported by the East Asia Business Council (EABC) and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRA).

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “As ASEAN has placed great emphasis on transforming itself into a digital bloc, bridging the digital gap among its Member States is becoming one of the challenges for greater economic integration. Although the GMS Countries have great potential considering their increasing purchasing power, growing internet penetration, and young middle class, the e-commerce industry of the sub-region is still yet to develop. This is due to immature system of e-payments, lack of logistics efficiency, and absence of harmonized legal frameworks. I hope this Workshop would support the capacity building of the GMS countries and facilitate regional cross-border trade, thus contributing to narrowing the digital gap within ASEAN and paving the way for further cooperation between Korea and the GMS countries.”

The Opening Ceremony of the Workshop will be held on 22 August in Seoul, where Secretary General Kim Young-sun and Myanmar Ambassador Thura U Thet Oo Maung are expected to deliver remarks. In following days, experts from Amazon and Barterfli Holdings will give lectures on the topics of ‘Overview of E-commerce in Asia-Pacific’, ‘Market Trends, Business Model and Consumer Behavior of Korea’s E-commerce Industry’, ‘Technical Barriers and Enabling Environment for E-commerce’, ‘Case on ADB’s Cross-border E-commerce Project’, and ‘Harmonization of Legal and Regulatory Frameworks’. Participants of the Workshop will also visit the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) and E-Mart, a local logistics giant, to learn about good practices of online platform and logistics.

The ASEAN-Korea Centre has organized various work programs with the GMS countries with the aim to facilitate businesses with this promising market, which has shown 5-8% of growth rate, as well as to contribute to narrowing development gap within ASEAN. In October, the 5th ROK-Mekong Business Forum will be held in Vientiane, Lao PDR, where the Centre will dispatch a business delegation from the tourism, franchise, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors to conduct one-one-one business meetings and site visits. In addition, the Capacity Building Program on Cultural Heritage will take place in Luang Prabang to promote sustainable tourism development in the region.
