ASEAN and Korean youth to envision a future through academic essays

- The ASEAN-Korea Centre to hold the 2nd ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest (Submission deadline by 15 October) -

Seoul, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will organize the 2nd ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest in cooperation with the Korea Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and the ASEAN University Network (AUN). A total of 10 winners, 5 each from ASEAN and Korea, will be awarded with a study trip to visit universities, research institutes, and cultural sites.

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “Held for the first time last year, the ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest gained great attention from the ASEAN and Korean youth receiving over 130 entries. This year is a momentous year for ASEAN and Korea marking the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN and ASEAN-ROK Cultural Exchange Year. However, they still face growing uncertainties and challenges amid inward-looking trade policies among major economies and the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution. On such this significant juncture, the 2nd ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest will provide a meaningful platform for the future leaders of ASEAN and Korea to conduct scholarly research on how to navigate through current challenges and make a bright future.”

The Contest is open to undergraduate and graduate students of ASEAN and Korean nationalities. Applicants may choose one of the three themes: (1) 50 Years of ASEAN and the Prospects for Multilateralism; (2) ASEAN and Korea 4.0: Adapting Digital Economy; and (3) ASEAN-Korea Educational Cooperation for Mutual Understanding. All entries must be submitted electronically by 15 October 2017 (Midnight, KST) on http://bit.ly/2017akessay. A qualified panel of judges chosen by the organizers will select 10 best essays, 5 each from ASEAN and Korea, that will be announced on 8 November at official website (http://www.aseankorea.org).

What makes this year’s Contest more meaningful is that an academic workshop will be held for the winners to present their essays and have an in-depth discussion with other students. In addition, winners will be offered with an opportunity for a study trip either to an ASEAN country or to Korea based on their nationalities as a prize. Also, winning entries will be printed in a publication entitled Young Perspectives, which will be distributed to relevant organizations and libraries in Korea and ASEAN. This Contest is supported by the ASEAN Secretariat, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea, and the ASEAN Foundation.
