Workshop on E-Commerce to drive Cambodia toward a digitally-enabled economy

- ASEAN-Korea Centre to organize the Capacity Building Workshop in Cambodia (7 July, Phnom Penh) -

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will organize the Capacity Building Workshop for Expanding Business Opportunities in E-Commerce on 7 July 2017 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Jointly organized with Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, the Workshop aims to share Korea’s e-commerce development strategies and business practices, as well as contribute to the development of e-commerce sector of Cambodia.

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “As more and more businesses are moving away from traditional off-line stores and going on-line, electronic commerce has increasingly become an important parcel of doing cross-border businesses. To align itself with this fast-changing trend, Cambodian government recently adopted the Cambodian ICT Masterplan 2020, seeking to enhance its e-commerce legislation, policy making, financial networks, and logistics. I hope this Workshop serves a platform not only to enhance competitiveness of Cambodian e-commerce sector but also to expand business opportunities between Cambodia and Korea.”

The opening ceremony of the Workshop will be held on 7 July at Sokha Hotel, Phnom Penh. Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, Kim Weon-jin, Ambassador of ROK to Cambodia, and a high-ranking official from the Ministry of Commerce are expected to deliver remarks. Following the ceremony, experts and business representatives from Korea and Cambodia will make presentations on the themes of ‘Overview of Korea’s E-Commerce Development Strategies’, ‘Policies and Opportunities in Cambodia’s E-Commerce Industry’, ‘How to Enhance Cross-border E-Commerce’, and ‘Business Start-up for SMEs’.

The Korean delegation who will take part in this Workshop is composed of experts from the Korea International Trade Association, the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), the Changgong E-Commerce Laboratory, as well as the Kyungpook National University. Korean business representatives will also be participating in the Workshop in search for new business opportunities in the e-commerce area through one-on-one business meetings and site visits.

Recognizing the importance of ASEAN-Korea partnership in the digital era, the ASEAN-Korea Centre has been carrying out a number of programs in digital industries. The Workshop that will be held in Cambodia is a part of back-to-back workshops in Lao PDR and in Cambodia, which will enable the ASEAN-Korea Centre to learn about the current status and potential of the e-commerce industries of the two countries. In addition, the Capacity Building Workshop for Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Cross-border E-Commerce for GMS countries will be also held in Seoul in August this year.
