ASEAN and Korean Youth to Envision Environmentally Sustainable Cities

- 2017 ASEAN-Korea Youth Network Workshop to be held in Korea and Malaysia (3-13 July) -

Seoul, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will organize the 2017 ASEAN-Korea Youth Network Workshop under the theme of “Promoting Clean and Green Environment through the Establishment of Environmentally Sustainable Cities” during 3-12 July in Korea and Malaysia. Youth from the 10 ASEAN Member States, Korea, China, and Japan will take part in various lectures and discussions related to the themes as well as in team-building and cultural activities.

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “With the rapid economic development, industrialization, and the subsequent urbanization, cities in ASEAN face numerous challenges such as congestion and pollution. To tackle these challenges and improve the quality of lives of its people, ASEAN launched the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities, which has implemented various efforts such as the ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City Award held in every three years. I hope this Workshop would provide a platform for the youth, the future leaders of ASEAN and Korea, to find possible solutions to the key challenges in terms of the sustainability in region while forging a long-lasting friendship.”

The Workshop is composed of two programs: Korea Program will take place in Incheon and Seoul (3-7 July) and Malaysia Program in Melacca, Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur (8-12 July). Approximately 80 students from ASEAN, Korea, as well as from China and Japan who were recruited in cooperation with the ASEAN-China Centre and the ASEAN-Japan Centre will participate in the Korea Program. Jointly organized with the United Nations ESCAP North-East Asia Office and the Incheon Metropolitan City, the Korea Program features visits to the theme-related sites and historical spots, team-building and video making activities, lectures on ASEAN-Korea relations and initiatives on establishing environmentally sustainable cities in Korea and ASEAN, and cultural exchanges.

The Malaysia Program will be jointly organized with the International Youth Centre (IYC) of Malaysia. 20 Korean students who were chosen as Youth Ambassadors to play a bridging role between participants from ASEAN and Korea, as well as 20 ASEAN students will engage in activities related to the theme such as wetland experience in Putrajaya, tree-planting in Melaka, visit to the Melaka Green Technology cooperation and Melaka World Solar Valley, and cultural experiences and city exploration in support of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) of Malaysia. In addition, on the last day of the program, the participating youth will be given an opportunity to meet Yu Hyun-seok, Ambassador of the ROK to Malaysia for an in-depth conversation on visions of ASEAN and ASEAN-Korea relations.
