Korea and the Philippines to seek closer business cooperation in food sector

- ASEAN-Korea Centre to organize the Trade Facilitation Workshop for the Philippine MSMEs (17-20 May, Manila) -

Manila, Philippines - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will organize the Trade Facilitation Workshop for the Philippine MSMEs on 17-20 May 2017 in Manila, the Philippines. Jointly organized with the Philippine Export Marketing Bureau (EMB), the Workshop aims to enhance competitiveness of food sector MSMEs in the Philippines, thereby facilitating trade between the Philippines and Korea. A delegation, composed of members from 10 Korean food companies will share their expertise with local MSMEs at the Trade Facilitation Seminar. The delegation will also take part in the International Food Exhibition (IFEX), industrial visits, and one-on-one business meetings with Philippine business representatives.

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “The Philippines has one of the fastest growing food industries in the region, with over 10% of annual growth rate. Despite this, Philippine food products have not gained much access to the Korean market. I hope this Workshop would serve as a platform for the food MSMEs in the Philippines to enhance competitiveness and strengthen business network with Korean buyers in order for them to further expand into the Korean market.”

With an aim to share know-how and expertise of the Korean food companies, the Trade Facilitation Seminar will be held on 20 May at World Trade Center in Metro Manila. Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, Nora K. Terrado, Undersecretary of the Trade and Investment Promotion Group (IPG), Department of Trade and Industry are attending the opening ceremony to deliver remarks, along with Raul S. Hernandez, Ambassador of the Philippines to ROK and Kim Jae-shin, Ambassador of ROK to the Philippines. Following the ceremony, presentations by the Korean delegation on sourcing and packaging trends, importing procedures, and global market access strategies will be conducted. About 100 representatives from local food companies are anticipated to attend the event. After the Seminar, the Korean delegates and the Philippine MSMEs representatives will have one-on-one business meetings to strengthen network for future businesses.

As part of the Workshop, the Korean business delegation will be given an opportunity to gain up-to-date information on the current development of food industry in the Philippines through presentations by officials from the EMB and the Board of Investment. Furthermore, the delegation will visit the International Food Exhibition (IFEX), the country’s biggest international food exhibition, whereby they can take part in active interactions with businessmen in the food sector from all over the world. They are also slated to meet with local players at the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry to seek future business partners.
