ASEAN-Korea Tourism Development Workshop 2017-11-06 ~ 2017-11-10 |Lotte Hotel, Seoul & Andong

● Program Title: ASEAN-Korea Tourism Development Workshop

● Date: 6-10 November

● Venue: Lotte Hotel, Seoul & Andong

● Theme: ASEAN-Korea Tourism Development Workshop – Sustainable Tourism for Cultural Heritage Destinations

● Objectives:

-Identify key issues and address the challenges of promoting cultural heritage sites as tourism destinations

-Share sustainable tourism practices as a catalyst for cultural heritage site protection and conservation to enhance understanding

-Facilitate community benefit from sustainable utilization of cultural resources

-Provide a regional platform to strengthen network among ASEAN and Korean experts and stakeholders

● Participants: 80~100 tourism professionals from both private and public sectors from Korea and ASEAN Countries

● Main Activities:

- 1st Day of Workshop (7 Nov):The Workshop is composed of lectures by two key note speeches: 1) Mr. Tan Sri Dr. Ong Hong Peng, Former Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia; 2) Dr. Rii Hae Un, President of International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Korea. And five presentations: 1) Mr. Ricardo Favis, Consultant of UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Office, 2) Lisa Choegyal, Consultant of World Bank, 3) Kim Ji-hong, Deputy Director of Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, 4) Wouter Schalken, Senior Tourism Specialist of World Bank; and 5) Ms. Tetty DS Ariyanto, Consultant for ASEAN Cultural and Heritage Tourism Sub Working Group. Lectures will be followed by Panel Discussion and Q&A Session, to share knowledge and answer questions among the participants and lectures.

- 2nd Day of Workshop (8 Nov)

Country Presentation/Discussion- A specific case study from each country relevant to the workshop lecture themes will be assigned prior to the arrival, which will later be shared with other Workshop participants. Based on the pre-assignments and findings from the lectures on the 1st day of the workshop, participants will present each country’s presentation on the 2nd day of the workshop, 8th of November on following topics:

    a) Case Study of developing and promoting cultural heritage sites in ensuring a balance between tourism development and preservation of cultural heritage sites, and engaging local community to boost local economic and social benefits

    b) Key issues and challenges in ensuring sustainable tourism development contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage sites

    c) Recommendations and new policy ideas to overcome challenges above which reflect findings on key points from the lectures on Day 1

- 3rd Day of Workshop (9 Nov)

Technical Visit: Paving the Road to Cultural Heritage Tourism Destinations -A visit to a Korean cultural heritage site will be arranged for exploring Korea’s specific case, Andong.
